Information
about the locality
There are supermarkets in
neighbouring villages of St Genis and St Andre, and two
large ones at Le Boulou. There is a designated network of
cycling and walking trails between the local villages, and
an especially interesting 'botanical trail'.
On the coast close by are the resorts of Argeles,
St.Cyprien, and Canet with wide, sandy beaches. The very
attractive old fishing port of Collioure, famous for its
association with modern artists such as Matisse, Derain,
and Picasso is just a few minutes drive from the villa.
To the south are the coastal towns of Port Vendres and
Banyuls and the numerous rocky coves where the Pyrenees
tumble into the mediterranean. The very scenic coastal road
down into Spain provides an opportunity to see some very
rugged coastline.
The Spanish border is about 10km south of Montesquieu, at
Le Pertus, a busy town with many shops selling inexpensive
goods of all kinds. About twenty kilometres further on is
the large town of Figures with the world famous Musee Dali.
In the same region is coastal resort towns of Roses and
Cadeques.
In the opposite direction is Perpignan, a very old city, in
former times the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, with an
impressive Royal Castle. The maze of narrow streets which
make up the old town have an exotic North African feel, and
provide for excellent shopping.
To the North of Perpignan are the Corbiere Hills , renowned
for its wine, and the location of a number of Cathar
castles such as Queribus and Perypertuse.
